Well class, I actually asked this question during class but
I want to hear your opinion on it. As
you know, lucid dreaming is when we can control what is happening in our
dream. So, suppose you are having a
lucid dream and you do something immoral.
When you wake up, should you feel guilty about it? Tell me why you feel the way you do.
When you make an immoral decision in a lucid dream you feel guilty because, even though you weren't awake and really doing those things, you still made that choice and by the nature of the dream you were fully aware of what was right and wrong. You had the opportunity to make your own choice and you chose the wrong one so who is to say that wouldn't be the case in a real life situation. It has been mentioned that some dreams could be to prepare us for real possible scenarios, so it's still important that you make the right choice so you know how to handle it if that situation ever comes along.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand it is still a dream and you did not make that decision in real time. It could be argued that in the dream you were just testing what would happen so you would know the consequences, but that can be turned around as well. In a dream not everything works like it does in life so the effects of that action, whatever it may be, could be totally different. The easier way to avoid this conflict of opinions and emotions is to always try your best to make good choices both sleeping and awake.

I dont think you can control what you dream about. Cause when I dream I dream about things that have been going on in my life. Some in the past, that are happening now, or in the future. Not saying I know whats going to happen in the future. But what I think or hope it will be. Yes people say they can control what they do in their dream. But till I do it my self. I dont really believe it. So I guess if you do have Lucid dreams, and do something wrong or immoral, you shouldn't feel guilty about it unless you at on that dream.
ReplyDeleteWell this is my comment. Now back to dinner!

In my opinion if your having a lucid dream and you decide to do something immoral and you are fully aware of what you decided to dream about you should feel guilty so a certain extent. For example the worse type of lucid dreaming that you can have is cheating on your spouse or girlfriend or boyfriend then in that case you should feel every bit of guilt because you were consciously thinking of doing immoral things with another person in your lucid dream, and that is the same thing as having an immoral thought when being awake because you had full control of what you could dream.
ReplyDeleteLets say that you are having a lucid dream that your deciding to do drugs, or participating in sexual activities you should feel guilty in a way because you are having those thoughts. Even though you are not acting upon your desires when you are awake you are still thinking about doing those immoral things.
These are my thoughts on this topic (:
-Mariely Jimenez
The way I see it you should not feel guilty for anything in a lucid dream unless it will affect someone else. If you decide to do drugs and get high in a ludicrous dream then you don't need to feel bad at all. If you were to do something immoral that would go against your values then you should feel guilty. It is the same way as with real life situations, if you go against your values and affect someone else you should feel guilt. Like Mariely said, if you are doing immoral things with someone other than a significant other, you should feel guilty because you chose to do that action. It is not so much the action, but it is the thought and purpose behind the action. If your moral values are do whatever you want then there is no reason for guilt.
ReplyDeleteNo its just a dream, if you wanted to do it without being punished. So theres nothing to feel guilty. So it doesnt matter unless you do it in real life, then you might need some help depending on what it is.

Well in my seventeen years of life I have had multiple lucid dreams, and in my experience in a lucid dream I haven't been one hundred percent aware of my thoughts and surroundings. I think you could argue on how aware you really are in a lucid dream. I personally think you shouldn't feel guilty because you aren't fully aware of your actions even if you do know your dreaming. An immoral dream can make you feel guilty, but I think your immoral drive is overpowering your rationalization because you are still dreaming and not awake. I think if you act on those immoral thoughts in real life, then ya you should feel guilty because it no longer affects just you, but others as well. -Andrea Davila
ReplyDeleteI feel like you shouldn't feel guilty. It's just a dream, yes you may control parts of it, but not all of it. Which kind of messes the whole thing up. I feel like if you don't wake up thinking I'ma do that in a dream it's completely fine, but then if do you want to act up on it, that's a different story. Mainly people wake up thinking, "Did I really just dream that?" and that shows they didn't like the dream, so why think twice about it and feel guilty. Yes sometimes they may want it to happen in real life, but that's being human, we're not meant to be perfect and no one should feel guilty about a dream, my point is if they don't act upon it, they shouldn't feel guilty about it. -Jasmine Izarraga
ReplyDeleteI don't think you should take the full extent of the guilt you would if you had done the same thing in real life. I do think if you have enough control to change the type of dream to something different, that would be ideal. It depends on how lucid the dream is and the extent of your control. But, over all I think you should feel some guilt, but it was still just a dream.

When you commit an immoral act within your dreams it doesn't mean that you're a bad person or that you've sinned because you haven't physically commited the act and unless you've willed yourself to dream of such erotic things you shouldn't worry yourself and lose sleep over it because it you think about it, it's only natural for our bodies to want to have such physical arousal and since we do not yet have partners in which to exert these desires we express that built up desire within our dreams. In any case, I wouldn't feel guilty if I that were the case. Maybe weirded out, but definitely not guilty. -Makayla Memmott
ReplyDeleteIf you're aware of what you're doing and you decide to do something you KNOW is wrong then heck yah you should feel guilty. If you would've done the immoral thing in real life you would feel guilty. What's the difference between that and your dream? I'm not saying that you should feel like the worse human being on the planet, because it was just a dream, but since you were in control of what you were doing, to some extent, you should feel guilty.

I havent really been able to control my dreams.. I wish I knew how then I wouldn't dream the dreams that i have. But if you do something immoral in your lucid dreaming I think you should feel a little quilty because you know whatever you are doing is wrong.
ReplyDelete- Emily Conrad:)
I think it depends. if you wake up and you are wondering why the heck you did that thing, and you think about it and realize you wouldn't do that now that your awake then you shouldn't feel guilty. but if you would totally do it when you were awake too then maybe you should feel guilty. i think that maybe your "consciousness" when your dreaming is different then your consciousness when you are actually awake.
ReplyDelete- Nichol Murdock
I don't think you should feel guilty at all, its just a dream. It's not like everyone doesn't have dreams like that. If you wake up from that lucid dream and actually do it when you were actually awake then that is when you should feel guilty about your actions. Even if its called a lucid dream you don't really control it 110%, so you don't necessarily control it.
ReplyDelete-Denise Martinez
I think if it is a one time thing then I would say it is such a bad thing because it is a natural thing for us to have those desires. But if you are doing it on a daily basis then I would say you've got problems bro!
ReplyDeleteFrom what I know, lucid dreaming is when you are aware of the actions you take in a dream, you are aware that you are in a dream itself. So just like yourself being awake, knowing what consequences might come by the actions you choose to do, the same principle would apply to any kind of immoral action in a lucid dream. However, dreams and the ability to fully control them is really difficult to understand, and so, at times you might feel guilty and at times you might not; it might all depend on the person. We are not at %100 in control of our minds, so having a sort of a dream might leave you wondering why you even had that dream in the first place.
ReplyDeletei personally believe that if you are having lucid and you put yourself in an immoral situation that you should feel guilty, but that is my own opinion. everyone has different standards, and beliefs. with a lucid dream you are in control so you should be the one feeling guilty.
ReplyDelete-mckenzie bushnell
I think if you are having a dream that you are in control of and you decide to do something immoral and against your own personal standards you should feel guilty because you chose to do those things. Since you weren't in control you wanted it to happen.
ReplyDelete-Samantha Alder
As we have learned in class, a lucid dream is where the 'dreamer' is in control of his or her actions, thoughts, and/or decisions. With that in mind, I think one really should feel guilty when dreaming immorally. I also find it not at all respectful to that person that is being dreamed about, man or woman, whether the dreamer 'knows' them or not. No it's not 'OK', the lucid dreamer should feel guilty when dreaming immorally.

"Thoughts can lead to action"- just another thing to think about.
DeleteI dont think that a person should feel guilty having a lucid dream whatsoever. everyone has those hormones in them and you cant really control those feelings even in dreams. we have times we do remember our dreams and others where we dont. so why blame yourself for something you cant control?
ReplyDeletei feel like it really depends on the person, the dream, how often you have the dream. i wouldnt worry or feel guilty about it because i know i would never act on those dreams also because i know dreams are a way of getting out feelings and i feel like its a safe healthy way to get that anger out.
ReplyDeletei think it really doesn't matter. it just a dream, its really didn't happen so i don't see what the big deal is. feeling guilty its pretty much on the person i guess but i don't see why you would feel guilty because it was real life.
ReplyDelete-DAVID CISNEROS
If you are consciously aware of what your actions are whether you are awake or not then I guess you can feel guilty. It just depends on how bad what you are doing is. Mainly I feel like it depends on your morals. you act out what you feel , so if it's bad thoughts its better to do it in a dream, opposed to fo it in real life when you actually hurt someone. That's just how I feel!
ReplyDeleteI think that as you become aware of the things around you it is almost impossible to think about them. Even as much as you fight to keep those immoral thoughts out of your head, they are still there and you can minimize them. When you are dreaming, however, I don´t think you can be in total control of your dream. And it might not even be lucid dreaming when you have an immoral dream. I think that because you can´t really control it then you should not feel guilty unless you act on it later.
ReplyDelete-Edgar Cordova
I think that if you would do that in real life and you had the opportunity to do it then you should not feel guilty. This is just a "free pass" as Mr Fong would say. No guilt shoud be involved in this lucid dreaming thing.
ReplyDelete-Alec Woolley
I don't think you can have much control about what's in your dreams. Therefore, you shouldn't feel guilty. I think the only reason you should feel guilty, is when you start to act upon it. But I guess it depends on your standards, and the type of person you are.
ReplyDelete-Emily Douma
I dont think so it is natural to have....feeling like that..... as long as you don't act on it. But it would be SUPER AWKWARD if the immoral act was with someone you know, or met later on in life. Also something to consider is if this is happening like a lot then you should try to alter the way you think about the opposite sex, and make sure you have respect.
ReplyDelete- Mandy Butler
I think that if you are dreaming and you have those dreams you should't feel guilty. But I also think that there is crossing the line and its your call on what is crossing the line. If you have these thoughts while your awake you should feel guilty. I guess that I think it depends on the person and what they are ok with.

Thanks for blogging on this question. I sensed more angst from this question than from the other ones so far. Here are some thoughts to consider on this question. First of all, let’s understand that there is nothing wrong with feeling guilt. I like to equate guilt with pain. When you hurt something, pain warns you not to continue. Guilt in this sense is a warning telling you to not do something again. If you really think about it, it is very helpful. In fact, not heeding these warnings can lead to serious problems. But unremitting guilt, just like unremitting pain loses its value when there is really nothing to be warned from. In other words, phantom pain or chronic pain that doesn’t protect us can do more harm than good. The same can apply with needless guilt.
ReplyDeleteWith that said, let’s look at lucid dreaming. The question we really need to ask ourselves is how lucid (showing ability to think clearly) are we when we are having a lucid dream. I don’t believe there is a clear cut answer here. It can be more lucid for some than for others but regardless, you are still unconscious when you are having a lucid dream. I doubt you will ever be as lucid compared to your conscious state. Therefore, you are probably not as accountable for what you do in a lucid dream as you would be during your waking state.
So to sum it all up, should you feel guilt over a lucid dream? A little guilt is not a big deal - good to be warned about things you shouldn’t be doing - but you probably don’t need to beat yourself over the head with it.
Sweet dreams. :)
Mr. Fong
